Buying a Used Trailer

Buying a Used Trailer

Buying a New Trailer is great if you have the funds, but for many a used trailer is a cheaper and a worthy option. However good trailers hold their value well, so sometimes you do only get what you pay for.  A trailer in poor condition can be a serious hazard to the owner and other road users.  So its really essential that you find a road legal and safe trailer to use on our roads.

Make you sure you view the trailer before any legal commitment takes place. There is a big temptation to buy a used trailer from Ebay and not to view it first. Its a gamble to not make a viewing, and its very awkward to barter after the price has been agreed.

Make sure the Trailer is really suitable for your purposes. The quality and type of trailer should closely relate to the demands you will be placing on it. All trailers have to be safe and legal, but there is a big difference in quality and what they can handle.

Find out if the seller is the legal owner, check for any receipts to prove the original purchase. Alternatively any old maintenance receipts can show proof the seller has used the trailer for some time.

Check for signs of wear and tear – Does it reflect the price and age of the trailer. Prices of parts and engineer bills soon out way any purchase savings so be careful.

The Trailer seller should be happy for you to collect from their home address. If they try and use different addresses or will only delivery be extra cautious.

That’s some basics out of the way, please view our other articles to learn more about buying a safer trailer.

I can recommend this website of course for Finding a used trailer.

Other websites include: Ebay Gumtree and not forgetting your local newspaper.

Hitching up A trailer Correctly

Hitching Up a trailer correctly

Lifting a trailer onto a tow ball can be quite difficult depending on the weight of the trailer. If you using the heaver variety raise the coupling to above tow ball height by winding the jockey wheel down first.

Get an assistant to wait by the trailer, you can then reverse back so your towing vehicle stops just below the hitch without making contact.

Attach the breakaway cable to the two ball before doing anything else so the trailer is now linked to the vehicle.

Manouver the trailer and accurately align the two componets and engage and lock by raising the jockey wheel back up.

Once the coupling is locked its wise to wind the jockey wheel down again to lift the rear of the car up a little to check for 100% engagement.

Now wind the jockey wheel fully up and reclamp the unit as far up as possible. Make sure this is as secure as the jockey wheel can become loose and work its way back down. Securely attach the breakaway chain or cable to the tow bracket or to the hook (if fitted), You can legally attach the breakaway chain to the two ball but many people prefer attachment to the tow bracket/hook in case of complete hitch failure.

If the coupling is of the old type with a hand-operated reversing catch, make sure this is not engaged before you drive off.

Join together the electrics and get an assitant to check the lights are all working properly with the vehicle. Make sure there are no cables loose and all trailer breaks are released.

On Uk Roads its a legal requirement to have the trailers number plate the same as the towing vehicle. Ideally this should be of the type used on any other legal vehicle securely attached to the rear of the frame.

Have a walk around the vehicle to check for any potential issues before setting off.

Most accidents with the hitch are due to failure to complete some part of the above instructions correctly. The rule is to check, check again, and triple check before driving on public roads. Try and avoid distractions.

Small Trailer Safety

The Owner of a small trailer has to abide by Road laws to make sure its suitable for road useage. Trailers don’t have to pass MOT test, so its down to the owner or the person towing the trailer to make sure its of a decent standard and amintained properly.

Here is a trailer safety Checklist to help you decide if your trailer is suitable for public roads..

  1. If you trailer has brakes, it should be not more than 85% of the towing vehicles weight.
  2. If the trailer has no brakes, there is an upper limit of 750 kg load weight and also its illegal to be over 50% of the towing vehicle weight.
  3. When the trailer is loaded, the load has to be fairly even to make sure it tows properly and is stable.
  4. A breakaway cable is a must when towing any trailer.( see video)
  5. The coupling height is suitable for the towing vehicle.
  6. The tyres have sufficient tread and are at suitable pressure.
  7. The lights are working correctly, clean and viseable.
  8. The trailer has a legal number plate.
  9. Be sure the towing vehicle hitch is the correct type, size, and rating to
    match the coupler.

Servicing Trailer Bearings

dust cap bearing servicing

Servicing trailer bearings is an important part of owning a Trailer. Annual servicing can save lots of wheel problems in the future.

Its a relatively easy job you can do yourself.

This DIY job takes about an hour and save yourself a big repair bill and the grief of being stranded on a busy road.

It will take around 1-2 hours and ir fairly inexpensive to buy the bearings.

The job needs the following tools.

  • Axle Stands or bricks.
  • A jack
  • A strong large flat ended screwdriver.
  • A hammer
  • Set of Nose Pliers.
  • Brake cleaner
  • Paraffin
  • Clean Newspapaer
  • Wrench
  • Flat ended Screwdriver or chisel

First job is to loosen the nuts from the wheel before jacking the trailer up, just loosen don’t completely remove.
Jack the trailer up and support using the bricks or preferably axle stands.

Begin removing the nuts followed by the wheel.

Carefully Remove the dust cap loose with a large screwdriver by prying it free.( see Video)

Find the cotter pin and straighten the ends so it can be pulled free with the nose pliars.

Remove the cottor pin completely and place in a clean organised place like a bowl so you don’t lose it.

Once the cottor pin is removed the retaining nut and washer should pull of then pull the hub off the spindle. The Front bearings should also come out with the hub so be ready for this and place them on the clean paper to avoid contamination.

The rear bearing will usually need force to remove it. A common way is using a block of wood and hammer. (see videos) If the seal is rusted to the back of the hub spray WD-40 on the back to loosen. If the seal gets damaged you can replace relatively inexpensively.

Remove any grease from the components using paraffin in a bowl or container. .

6. Push the grease into the bearings, working from the wide side of the bearing. Keep pushing the grease into the roller until the cage and rollers are filled. Next coat the inside of the hub with grease. Tap the seal back onto the rear of the hub with a block of wood and hammer, and install the hub and bearings back on the spindle.

7. Thread the nut back onto the spindle and turn it clockwise. Spin the hub a few times as you tighten to make sure the bearings are seating properly. Tighten the nut firmly. Now back the nut off about an eighth of a turn until the hole in the spindle aligns with a space in the nut. Push in a new cotter pin and bend the ends of the pin to keep it from working its way out. Tap the dust cap back into place. Coat the lug threads with anti-seize compound, reinstall the wheel and tighten the lug nuts. Do the same for each wheel.

How to Sell your Used Trailer

If your willing to invest a bit of energy and thought, you should be able to sell your used trailer at the best price possible within your local area. There are many ways to sell your trailer, some free and some services that will cost you a bit of money. To get the best price and a faster sale its best to use more than one service to make sure your trailer has a good chance of selling.

Ways of finding a buyer for your used trailer

Around 80% of buyers will look online when thinking of buying a used trailer. So its a no brainer, use the internet, its cheaper than newspaper advertising and has the largest audience of buyers. You can use sites like ebay as well as online classifieds site like gumtree and trailers-for-sale.

Price

The price needs to reflect the type, age and condition of your trailers. A price set too high may delay your sale, and a price too low, costs you in missed revenue. So take survey of the current Second hand trailer market, to determine an average price for your trailer type. You can then increase or decrease depending on condition and age.

Description

A well written Advert Description should accurately highlight the most important features of your trailer. A short but precise ad will result in more qualified buyers and a quicker sale.

Include the following:

Explain why you’re selling the Trailer – This is a common question a buyer will ask.

Maintenance history. If you have any maintenance receipts or had servicing work done recently, make sure you mention it.

Disclose issues that might need fixing – Show your an honest seller, and let the buyer know of any issues. Trust is worth a lot when buying any type of used road Trailer.

Use proper punctuation - Capitalizing entire words or sentences is difficult to read and makes it seem like you’re shouting at buyers. Using slang can also drive some people away from your ad.

Are you open to offers- Be sure to mention if your price is fixed or flexible. This will save a lot of hassle and let the buyer know where he stand simmediately,.

Pictures

Photos will give your potential buyer a first impression of your Trailer. A photo will definitely quicken your sale, use multiple photos if possible.

Try to take the photos outdoors on a clear day. Common sense ideas such as washing the trailer first are all good ideas. A photo of the id plate is also useful if the trailer has one. Include a photo of any feature that makes your Trailer stand out.

Add Video

A lot of digital cameras now have a short video option on them. A video is probably the best way of showing off your trailer without a viewing. This will likely cut down on time wasters and viewings that lead to no sale.

Getting the Used Trailer Ready for Market

Cleaning

Cleaning your trailer makes it easier to sell and attract a higher price. Its a cheap simple way of making your trailer look newer and more attractive to the buyer.

Fixing

There’s always something small that needs top be repaired. You can leave it and the buyer might try and knock the price down. Some repairs are quick, cheap and easy. Get any simple repairs sorted and rule out any doubt.

Completing the sale:

Make a printed receipt up stating that the buyer is purchasing the trailer “as-is,” with no warranties. Keep a signed copy for your records. An instant form of payment is the best and safest way to accept funds. So cash, instant bank transfer are the best ways to make sure you have been paid before releasing the trailer to the buyer.
